Ponies Bought on Chincoteague Island

John and Rella Rice have fallen in love with the mystique and history of the feral ponies of Assateague Island off the coast of Virginia. The fire department of the neighboring island of Chincoteague round up the herds of ponies every July and swim them to the fairgrounds to auction off the young Chincoteague pony foals which ensures the survival of the wild herd by preventing overpopulation.

The Rices purchased four filly ponies bought on Chincoteague Island from the 2007 auction and brought them home to their farm in Truro, MA to raise, train and breed. They have also purchased a colt which has been named “Misty’s Irish Mist.” He is the great-great grandson of the original Chincoteague pony made famous by the author, Marguerite Henry. She wrote the children’s book series, Misty of Chincoteague which has been read and enjoyed by generations of pony-loving children since 1947.
